JNU approves a 5% quota for faculty children, extending benefits earlier limited to non-teaching staff. Effective this cycle; candidates must meet eligibility exams
Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) has approved a 5% reservation for children of its teaching staff, expanding a facility that was earlier available only to children of non-teaching employees, as per the TOI report.
The proposal was cleared by the executive council in its meeting on April 15, following an earlier nod from the Academic Council in March.
The new provision brings faculty members’ children under the same umbrella as non-teaching staff under the university’s reservation policy. Officials said the idea is to eventually streamline both categories into a single, uniform framework, similar to what is followed in several other universities. The move had been under discussion for some time before it was finally approved.

Similar policies in other universities
According to TOI, several central universities already have similar provisions for employees’ children, especially for non-teaching staff, while some also extend benefits to teaching staff.
Institutions like the University of Delhi (DU) and Banaras Hindu University (BHU) also follow comparable systems, though the percentage and scope of such reservations vary.
Applicable from ongoing admission cycle
According to TOI, the 5% quota will be implemented immediately and will apply to the current admission cycle as well. This means eligible candidates, children of JNU employees who have already appeared for entrance exams this year, will be able to benefit from the provision.

However, applicants will still need to meet the required eligibility criteria and qualify through the standard entrance process.
Admission through CUET and UGC-NET/JRF
JNU admits students to undergraduate and postgraduate courses through the Common University Entrance Test (CUET). PhD admissions are mainly based on UGC-NET/JRF scores.
