JNU Attack: JNU teachers association condemn 2 years of inaction

NEW DELHI: The Jawaharlal Nehru University Teachers Association, in a letter, condemned the continued inaction of the JNU administration and the Delhi Police on the violence on the JNU campus on January 5, 2020.

“Today marks the second year of the continued inaction by the university administration and the Delhi Police regarding the attack on JNU students and faculty despite televised videos of the attack surfaced in the media. Video footage of the miscreants being escorted out of the JNU main gate by the Delhi police are images that the world can never forget,” alleged the letter from JNUTA.

The teachers association has called for a social media campaign, gathering Twitter posts with the hashtag ‘#TwoyearsofJNUAttack’.

On January 5, a mob rampaged through students’ hostels on the JNU campus attacking students and teachers who attempted to intervene. The students attacked, many of them members of left-wing student organisations, have alleged that the attackers were members of the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad, a student organisation linked to the BJP. The attack came in the midst of protests against the Citizenship Amendment Act 2019 which provided for granting citizenship on the basis of religion.

M Jagadesh Kumar, now the caretaker vice-chancellor of JNU, has come under JNUTA’s criticism as well. No member of the mob that attacked the JNU students has been arrested in the two years.
