NEW DELHI: In the latest development to the 45-day standoff between students and administration in Jawaharlal Nehru University, the Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD) has released a list of agreements reached between the administration and the students.
However, the JNU Students Union (JNUSU) undercut the statement saying that “no consensus was reached” and that the MHRD is “misleading the media” with this statement.
“This has not been agreed to. Talks are still going on. This is not the document on which there was any consensus,” said N. Sai Balaji, former president, JNUSU.
Borne by UGC
The document released by MHRD today said that the students have agreed to pay the hostel fee which was increased from Rs. 10 to Rs.300 per month for double rooms and Rs. 20 to Rs.600 per month for single rooms.
The cost of services and utilities be borne by the University Grants Commission, the MHRD statement said.
The document also said that the administration will take “a lenient view” on the students and provide “a two-week concession” for the students “to compensate for the lost academic period”.
The MHRD also directed the administration and students to follow the orders of High Court in notifying JNUSU.
It also instructed students to “not hold dharnas around the administrative, academic blocks, and in the residential areas of the faculty and administration, maintain discipline”.
