JNU: Violence on campus as ABVP allegedly stops students from eating non-veg food

NEW DELHI: Jawaharlal Nehru University Students' Union (JNUSU) accused Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) members of forcibly stopping students from eating meat in the hostel canteen on the occasion of Ram Navami, and attacking students, including the mess secretary. According to left party members in JNU, ABVP began stone-pelting in which some students got injured.

Pictures circulating on social media posted by AISA party members show that some students were bleeding due to the attack and stone-pelting. ABVP too shared a video of an injured student.

"Friends, ABVP does it again. First they tried to impose non veg ban to everybody in Kaveri Hostel, and when common students stood up against #FoodFascism, the Sanghi goons resorted to all out violence. Students are facing serious wounds," tweeted the All India Students Association (AISA). Pictures of wounded students were also shared.

According to a statement from AISA, Akhtarista Ansari, Madhurima Kundu and N Sai Balaji from AISA are severely wounded by the ABVP attack.

The Students' Federation of India (SFI) organised a protest march to Vasant Kunj Police Station against the ABVP attack on students and their right to food. The protestors demanded an FIR on ABVP goons.

"Hundreds of JNU students march against ABVP's hooliganism in JNU. The gherao of Vasant Kunj Police Station Delhi continues. Attack on the freedom to eat and wear will not work. Delhi Police will have to take action against Sanghi goons," said AISA in another tweet.

ABVP alleged that the puja celebration was delayed due to the ruckus created by leftist parties. In a statement, ABVP pointed out that Ramzan is being celebrated on the campus very peacefully and simultaneously. ABVP accused left parties of dragging ABVP into the issue as part of their propaganda to get media attention. It also accused left parties of politicising a religious celebration.
