Kerala govt to improvise Class 1 textbook curriculum; teachers submit review through Google forms

NEW DELHI: Kerala education minister, V Sivankutty, shared his feedback towards new improvisations in the Class 1 textbooks. The previous textbook was said to have activities and curriculum, making it difficult for students to complete the syllabus on time.

Recently, the Kerala school teachers have also submitted their feedback through Google forms regarding the improvisations requirement in the class 1 textbooks.

Previously, the Kerala government implemented the Malayalam and Math curriculum based on the realization that all the children who went through the old curriculum did not get basic math and language skills. The Kerala government was then ready for comprehensive reforms in the textbooks.

As per V Sivankutty's statement, “The spelling and pronunciation of each letter were determined to be taught in a way that all children could understand. Considering all the children in each letter will take more time. It should not be seen as a problem.”

Previous Class 1 textbooks curriculum

As per the minister’s statement, the previous textbook did not consider the holistic development of the children. Topics such as art education, and physical education did not even have learning outcomes in the integrated textbook. Following this, the government decided to fix the problem and also added activities for the difficult topics to make children’s learning experience better.

Preparation of Class 1 new textbooks

The textbook will be prepared by a small team of experts, only after identifying the problems and opportunities accurately. The government has collected feedback from teachers every year to improve the textbook.

However, some of the teachers said there are no such requirements to improve the curriculum. The education minister does not agree with the teachers and constantly aims to improve the children’s experience towards higher quality education.

Minister’s statement on improvement in curriculum

During the first exam, there was no criticism, regarding the textbook curriculum, says the minister. He adds: “After the first term exam, there was no criticism. That means children have gained in that term. The government is trying to match the content and exchange days as much as possible. I shared the diaries written by the first graders. By the middle of the year, children are starting to write on their own. Language learning becomes effective when a combined diary writing, and textbooks are combined.”

Education minister further adds by the end of the year, the Class 1 students will be able to write in error-free language. All the Kerala textbooks for the students will be approved and creative suggestions by teachers will also be accepted.
