Maharashtra: All schools, colleges in Nagpur shut as IMD issues heavy rain alert

All schools, Anganwadis, colleges and coaching institutes in Nagpur district will remain closed on July 9, 2025, in view of a heavy rainfall alert issued by the India Meteorological Department (IMD). The announcement was made by district collector Vipin Itankar, who also serves as chairperson of the District Disaster Management Authority.

The closure applies to all government and private educational institutions, including coaching centres, across the district, including areas under the Nagpur Municipal Corporation.

“Accordingly, I, Vipin Itankar, by the powers vested in me under the Disaster Management Act, 2005, and the government circular (reference no. 2), hereby declare a holiday on Wednesday, July 9, 2025, for all government and private Anganwadis, primary and secondary schools, colleges, and coaching institutes across Nagpur district (including areas under the Nagpur Municipal Corporation) in view of student safety,” the official notice said.

Orange alert in Amravati, Yavatmal

The IMD, in its forecast, has predicted moderate to heavy rainfall at various locations in Nagpur and Wardha districts on July 9. A red alert has been issued for both these districts. An orange alert has been issued for Amravati and Yavatmal, while Akola, Washim, Buldhana, Chandrapur, Bhandara and Gondia are under a yellow alert.

According to the district information office, some roads and state highways in Nagpur have also been closed for traffic due to water accumulation caused by continuous rainfall. The IMD’s regional centre reported 172.2 mm of rain in Nagpur between 8:30 pm on Tuesday and 5:30 am on Wednesday.

Recently, the Palghar district administration declared a holiday for school and college students on July 7 due to the forecast of heavy to extremely heavy rainfall. Teaching and non-teaching staff were instructed to report to work and assist with disaster management efforts.
