47.57% reserved teaching posts vacant in central institutions: Education Ministry

SC, ST, OBC Reservation: Less than half the reserved posts in central universities have been filled, the ministry of education said in Parliament.

NEW DELHI: The ministry of education, in reply to a question in Parliament, revealed that 47.57% of teaching posts for reserved categories in centrally-run educational institutions are vacant.

The data shows that the teaching posts reserved for Scheduled Caste (SC), Scheduled Tribe (ST) and other backward class (OBC) communities have been lying vacant despite reservations in these posts were sanctioned by the ministry.

It also revealed that in 45 central universities that come under the ministry of education, 47.08% teaching posts for reserved categories are vacant. In central universities, only 7,839 posts out of the 16,649 posts for reserved categories were filled.

The information follows the central government announcement of 27% reservation for OBC and 10% reservation for economically weaker sections (EWS) in the all-India quotas of state-run medical colleges. The ministry data shows that most universities have been unable to fill seats as per the reservation guidelines.

In the Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU), 52.53% reserved posts are vacant,with only 476 out of 906 reserved posts filled.

The Indian Institute of Science Education and Research (IISER) recorded 43.62% vacant posts. Only 106 posts out of the 243 posts for reserved categories were filled.

The Indian Institute of Science (IISc) has 63.42% reserved posts vacant. Only 352 posts were filled out of the 555 reserved posts.

The ministry said that “the onus of filling up the vacant posts lies on central universities, which are autonomous bodies created under Acts of Parliament”.

In the institutions under the ministry of education, 41.03% teaching posts reserved for SC communities were vacant.
