‘Need to create transparent system to recruit university, college teachers purely on merit,’:Maharashtra Guv

Mumbai University convocation: Around 1,64,465 students were granted degrees, 401 conferred with PhDs and 18 were awarded gold medals

NEW DELHI: Maharashtra governor CP Radhakrishnan, while addressing the University of Mumbai annual convocation today, said that there is a need to create a transparent system to recruit university and college teachers 'purely on merit’.

While speaking at the university campus in Mumbai, the governor stated that teaching is a noble profession and the selection process for university and college teachers should be transparent and based on efficiency.

Radhakrishnan’s statement comes a day after the union education minister Dharmendra Pradhan released the draft UGC regulations for faculty recruitment in higher educational institutions (HEIs), which has drawn ire from teachers and academicians.

Around 1,64,465 candidates were granted degrees, 401 conferred with PhDs and 18 students were awarded gold medals during the event.

Maharashtra governor on academic calendars

The governor stated that he has told vice chancellors to print annual academic calendars and observe the calendars carefully. He also said that convocations of the university should be held within one month after the declaration of results.

Maharashtra ministers Chandrakant Patil and Mangal Prabhat Lodha, secretary department of science and technology, government of India; Abhay Karandikar, president of St Louis University USA; Fred Pestello, VC of University of Mumbai; Ravindra Kulkarni, PRO VC; Ajay Bhamare, officials, graduating students and other invitees were present during the convocation.
