NEW DELHI: Aspirants that will be appearing for the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET UG) 2023 exam for admission into bachelor of medicine and bachelor of surgery (MBBS) and bachelor of dental surgery (BDS) can check the list of top medical and dental colleges in India as per National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) rankings 2022.

The admission to MBBS and BDS through NEET UG will be done on the basis of NEET result, choices of colleges as well as courses, seats available in selected colleges, reservation criteria and other factors. A total of 99,313 MBBS and 26,949 BDS are granted through NEET.

Meanwhile, NBE conducts NEET PG exam annually to fill a certain number of available seats in medical colleges across the country. There are around 42,182 PG medical seats in India.

NEET UG 2023: MBBS, BDS admission criteria

Colleges and universities have their own criterion, however candidates must qualify for a set of general criteria to be eligible to apply for NEET UG 2023 and medical and dental courses in India.

BDS Admission: Eligibility in India

Candidates will have to fill certain criteria in regards to age limit, pass percentage, qualifying exam, percentile to get admission in BDS programmes in India. BDS admission in India is only done through NEET scores. Under this degree duration, four years will be for theory and one year will be for a mandatory rotatory internship.

  • Students will be required to complete 10+2 with at least 50% marks in physics, chemistry, biology or biotechnology. Candidates from SC, ST, OBC category will required a minimum of 40% while PwD candidates must have secured 45% minimum in their qualifying exam.
  • Foreign students will be eligible if they meet regulations set by the Indian Universities (AIU).
  • Students must have studied physics, mathematics, chemistry, biology or biotechnology and any other elective with English as prescribed by NCERT.
  • Candidates must have completed 17 years at the time of admission or before December 31 of the year of admission. There is currently no upper limit for admission in BDS programmes in India.

  • In addition to these rules, candidates must also meet NEET UG criteria and other rules as per the regulations of the respective states in which they wish to take admission.

MBBS Admission in India: Eligibility criteria

All MBBS aspirants in India will have to appear for NEET UG exam every year to get admission to MBBS courses in India. In India, it is not possible to get direct admission to MBBS without appearing for the NEET UG exams.

Admission to 1,899 MBBS seats in AIIMS institutions and 249 seats in JIPMER is also granted through the NEET UG exam. A sum total of 654 medical colleges, 15 AIIMS, and 2 JIPMER institutions allow MBBS admission based on NEET UG results.

Only candidates that fulfill the following criteria will be considered for admission in Medical colleges in India.

  • Candidates must have passed their Class 12 exam in subjects- physics, chemistry and biology from a recognised board of education.
  • Students must have a minimum of at least 50% marks in the qualifying examination while SC, ST and OBC candidates must have minimum marks of 40% for MBBS admission.
  • Candidates must be a minimum of 17 years and maximum of 25 years for getting MBBS admission in India.
