NEET UG 2026 Tie-Breaking Rule Explained: Here’s how ranks are decided

The National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET UG) 2026 answer key is out, and results are expected soon. Over 24 lakh medical aspirants are calculating their probable scores and ranks using the provisional key. Amidst this, an important aspect candidates look for is the NEET tie-breaking policy, also known as the inter-se merit criteria. The exam conducting body, NTA, uses rules to decide ranks when two or more candidates obtain the same marks or percentile score in NEET UG.

With high competition and admissions depending on cut-offs , opening ranks, and closing ranks, even a one-rank difference can affect admission chances at top medical colleges. Inter-se merit of candidates for tie-breaking

If two students score the same total marks in NEET , NTA applies a set of predefined criteria to decide who will get the higher rank.

The first preference is given to the candidate scoring higher marks in Biology, which includes Botany and Zoology combined. A student with higher marks in Biology will receive a better rank than another candidate with the same overall score. If the tie remains after comparing Biology scores, NTA will check the marks obtained in Chemistry, and the candidate with higher Chemistry marks will be ranked above the other.

If both Biology and Chemistry scores are identical, Physics marks will be considered next. In cases where subject-wise marks are also equal, NTA then moves to accuracy-based parameters. The candidate with a lower proportion of incorrect answers compared to correct answers across all subjects will be preferred. This essentially rewards students who attempted questions more accurately.

For example, if two students scored 650 marks but one made fewer mistakes overall, that candidate will receive the better rank. If the tie persists, NTA will evaluate the accuracy level specifically in Biology. Next, the agency will compare the proportion of incorrect answers in Chemistry. If needed, the same process will be repeated for Physics.

In rare situations where all the above criteria fail to break the tie, the matter will be resolved through a random process under the guidance of an independent expert committee.

NEET result 2026 date

For the first time, NTA released the provisional answer key of NEET UG within three days of the examination. The exam was conducted on May 3, and the provisional answer key was released on May 6. The final answer key and result will be prepared after considering the objections raised by candidates. Following past trends, the NEET UG 2026 result is expected to be announced in the first week of June.
