NIRF Ranking 2020: IIT Madras best institute, IISc, JNU, BHU follow

NEW DELHI: The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Madras has once again emerged the best higher education institution in the country, in the National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) India Rankings 2020. The Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Bengaluru and IIT-Delhi have bagged the second and third spots.

The IISc Bengaluru is ranked first in the university Category, IIT-Madras is ranked first in the engineering category, IIM-Ahmedabad has topped in the category of management institutions, while All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), New Delhi is leading the table in the Medicine Category and Delhi’s Jamia Hamdard has topped in the pharmacy category, and National Law School of India University, Bengaluru has been ranked best in Law. Dental colleges were ranked for the first time on the request of the Dental Council of India, and the Maulana Azad Institute of Dental Sciences, Delhi, is number one.

A total number of 3771 unique institutions offered themselves for ranking under “Overall”, category-specific and / or domain-specific rankings for India Rankings 2020. In all, 5805 applications for ranking were made by these 3771 unique applicant institutions under various categories.

QS and THE Rankings

NIRF 2020 rankings were announced by the Union Human Resource Development Minister, Ramesh Pokhriyal ‘Nishank’, while making the announcement he also blamed international ranking agencies for lowering the ranking of Indian institutions under the Academic Reputation parameter. He said: “I don’t agree to this approach and our institutions are doing much better than what international ranking agencies rankings them based on their parameters.”

He also said that all the institutions in the country should be ranked. “All the 45,000 colleges, over 1,000 universities in the country should be ranked,” Pokhriyal said. He said he will request the UGC chairman to ensure participation in ranking becomes compulsory.

NIRF Ranking 2020

The NIRF Ranking 2020 was announced in ten categories with the introduction of dental college ranking for the first time. The categories included Overall, Universities, Engineering, Colleges, Management, Pharmacy, Medical, Architecture, and Law and Dental. In the Overall category, IIT Madras ranked first while IITs dominated major categories like Overall, Engineering and Architecture.

Among colleges, Delhi University's Miranda House has been ranked as the best college across India, while other colleges from the university are also among the top 10 colleges, Lady Sri Ram College is at second and Hindu college is at third.

As per AICTE chairman Anil D. Sahasrabudhe during the announcement informed that around 5805 institutions submitted their data for NIRF ranking this year.

Every year the MHRD announces the ranking on the first Monday of April, however this year due to COVID-19 crisis, the announcement was postponed. In the NIRF Rankings, the institutions are ranked based on broadly five parameters, Teaching-Learning and Resources (TLR), Research and Professional Practices (RPC), Graduation Outcomes (GO), Outreach and Inclusivity (OI) and Perception (PR). The five parameters with a ranking weightage given to each are then used to arrive at an overall ranking for the institutions.

In last year’s ranking the IIT Madras bagged the top rank in the Overall category, followed by IISc Bengaluru and IIT-Delhi at second and third spots. As many as 4,867 institutions participated in the rankings last year.
