This year, NIRF also made some changes in its ranking criteria of colleges and institutions.

“For medical, we have reduced the faculty to student ratio from 1:15 to 1:10 and for state government universities, we have raised it from 1:15 to 1:20. We have introduced parameters of sustainable development goals and indicators of National Education Policy (NEP) which includes the Indian Knowledge System, adoption of regional languages and multiple entry and exit points,” said Dr Anil Kumar Nassa, member secretary, National Board of Accreditation (NBA) and NIRF.

Students seeking admission to top medical colleges must qualify for NEET, conducted by the National Testing Agency (NTA). The NTA faced scrutiny over awarding grace marks and exam conduct, leading to multiple releases of the NEET UG 2024 results. The first result was announced on June 4, followed by a second on July 1 for 1,563 candidates who took a re-exam per a Supreme Court order. On July 26, the NTA released final revised NEET results following the Supreme Court's directive to revise the answer key due to an issue with a physics question.

The Medical Counselling Committee (MCC) will begin the registration for 15% All India Quota (AIQ) seats of state government-run medical colleges and 100% seats of central government-run medical colleges like AIIMS under NEET UG 2024 counselling from August 14.
