Why was the NLAT 2020 exam conducted?

Until this academic session, NLSIU used CLAT scores for admission to its various law programs. But given the delay in the conduct of the CAT 2020 exam due to the COVD-19 pandemic situation, the NLSIU decided to conduct its own exam. Justifying its move, the university said that any further delay in the admission process would result in ‘Zero Year’ with no admission.

Controversies follow the NLAT 2020 exam

  • There are reports that due to technical issues, many students were unable to partake in / or complete the exam.

  • Cumbersome verification process: The verification process was tedious, with students complaining it took up to 30 minutes or more.

  • Not allowed to take the exam even after verification: Some students were not able to take the test despite completing the verification process; in other cases there was very little time left after completing the verification process.

  • Technical help was not provided: NLSIU released a series of helpline numbers before the exam, but they proved to of little help to many candidates in distress.

  • Test is automatically submitted with time left in the clock: There are also complaints that the paper got submitted before completion of the allotted time, meaning students were not able to complete the paper.

  • Allegations of cheating: There are also reports flying in social media that cheating activities were not properly checked. If it is the case, it could call into question the integrity of the test.

What after the conduct of NLAT 2020 exam?

A provisional NLAT answer key 2020, containing answers to questions asked in the exam has been released after the conclusion of the exam. The NLAT provisional answer key can be used by the candidate to calculate probable scores. Result and admission put on hold by SC

While the Supreme Court has given the NLSIU the go ahead to conduct the NLAT 2020 exam, it has directed the university to refrain from declaring NLAT result 2020. The apex court has also directed that no admission be done on the basis of NLAT 2020 examination. The final decision on the admission process will be pronounced by the court based on the writ petition filed before it.

The writ petition is filed by a former VC of NLSIU and an aggrieved parent who challenged the sudden withdrawal of the university from CLAT 2020.
