NMC amends teacher eligibility regulations for medical colleges
NMC’s revised guidelines allow foreign MBBS, PG qualified candidates from mentioned countries to apply for teaching in Indian medical colleges.

NEW DELHI : The National Medical Commission (NMC) has notified amendments to the regulations for qualifications of teachers in medical colleges and institutes. The commission said that the regulations will now be called as “Teachers Eligibility Qualifications in Medical Institutions Regulations, 2023”. The amendment will come into effect from the date of the publication of the official gazette, NMC said.
According to the amendment, the clause 12.3 of the regulations, under the heading “General Norms regarding Foreign Postgraduate Qualifications for Equivalence”, is replaced with:
“12.3 In such cases, if he/she has acquired MBBS qualification in India and recognized PG qualification, eligible for registration in India, from any of the five English speaking countries, mentioned in Section 12.1 above, and fulfills the criteria mentioned in Section 12.1, then he/she shall be considered for teaching job in medical college in India, as per Teachers Eligibility qualifications in Medical Institutions regulations-2022 as amended from time to time, depending on his/her teaching experience in medical sciences.”

Previously, the clause was, “12.3 In such case he will be eligible for the post of Assistant Professor in the respective department and his subsequent promotions would be as per Teachers "Eligibility Qualifications in Medical Institutions Requlations - 2022".
“In exercise of the powers conferred by Section 57 of the National Medical Commission Act, 2019, the National Medical Commission hereby makes the following Regulations to further amend the “Teachers Eligibility Qualifications in Medical Institutions Regulations, 2022”,” said NMC while notifying the amendments.
In November last year, NMC had drafted the amendment in teacher eligibility qualification regulations and sought feedback from the colleges, students and others.
