SC order
The NMC has issued the directions on the basis of the Supreme Court order. Last year, the SC has also asked the NMC, the apex governing body for medical education in the country, to look into the allegation that 70% medical colleges are not paying the mandatory stipend to the MBBS interns.
Hearing a plea by medical interns, the bench of CJI DY Chandrachud, and justices JB Pardiwala and Manoj Misra said, "What is the National Medical Commission doing? These young doctors are putting in 16-20 hours a day.... This is like bonded labour.” Private medical colleges, which take heavy donations or capitation fees while admitting students, are not paying the mandatory stipend to the MBBS interns and asked as to what the NMC is doing as the regulator,” the bench added.
