No plan to rename IITs after great leaders of states, says education ministry

New Delhi: The Ministry of Education on Monday ruled out any proposal for renaming the Indian Institutes of Technologies (IITs) after great leaders of the states wherein they are situated. Minister of State for Education Subhas Sarkar provided the information in response to a written question in Lok Sabha.

"The government has no proposal for amending the names of the Indian Institutes of Technologies (IITs) after great leaders of the states wherein they are situated," he said.

On the first day of the winter session of the Parliament, Education minister Dharmendra Pradhan informed Lok Sabha that over 13,000 teachers positions are lying vacant in the central educational institutions.

In September, IIT Bombay, IIT Kharagpur, IIT Kanpur, IIT (Banaras Hindu University), and IIT Ropar had begun a ‘special recruitment drive’ to fill posts reserved for candidates. These institutes are required to implement a reservation in teachers appointment.

Pradhan also said recently that the government encourages high performing Indian universities to set up campuses in other countries in line with the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020. Similarly, selected universities from among the top 100 universities in the world will be facilitated to operate in India, he added.
