‘Rs 10 lakh a year for bed shower?’: Students slam OP Jindal over AC failure, ceiling collapse

OP Jindal Global University has suspended classes till August 25, citing air conditioning issues in hostels, however students are pointing out to infrastructural and administrative failures, as per media reports.

Recently, the AC unit in a hostel room of the private university reportedly burst and water started gushing out leading to waterlogging and property damage. In another incident, part of a ceiling collapsed, with students making a narrow escape.

Videos have gone viral on social media showing water showering from an AC and 'flood' in a hostel room and debris on the floor of a common room in separate incidents. Several students raised concerns about student safety and questioned the high fees charged by the Sonipat-based university.

“So I was with my friends at Nescafé and when we started walking from there, we heard really loud sounds and when we looked up, the construction metal rods were falling from above. They would’ve almost hit us if there were more people. Since there were barely any people we were able to run quickly,” a student said while sharing the video.

OP Jindal: Students question safety protocols

Reacting to the post, a user demanded a thorough check and said, “This is extremely concerning. Just because no one was injured doesn’t make it any less serious—it could have been a disaster. Colleges must carry out thorough infrastructure checks across the campus before students return, not after incidents like this.”

In a sarcastic reaction to the waterlogging video, a user remarked, “Rs 10 lakh for a year includes a bed shower too? Damn crazy deal.” “Shame on premium institutions like OP Jindal that rob parents blind and these are the safety standards they have to show for it,” charged another.

After the incidents, the university’s registrar reportedly sent out a clarification and week-long suspension mail, wherein it acknowledged the air conditioning issue and asserted that other systems are working fine.
