Patna University students protest over FIRs, arrests, campus restrictions

Students of Patna University, Bihar, protested on April 10 against the FIRs filed against them, arrests, and increased pressure on student opinion regarding their rights and educational conditions in the institution.

The protest was organised by the All India Students' Association (AISA) at Patna University. The march started at the Darbhanga House campus at 2 pm and went to the Patna College gate. At the end of the march, students burned copies of the FIRs as a symbol of protest. Students from different groups and colleges marked their presence.

During the protest, student leaders said that education-related issues are affecting the quality of education at the university. This includes NEP 2020 , the four-year undergraduate program (FYUP), and the poor infrastructure of the institute. They also said that instead of solving these issues, authorities are taking action against students who raise questions.

Students demand withdrawal of FIRs

Representatives of students expressed their concerns that protesting peacefully is among their basic rights, and filing FIRs against students can suppress them and restrict them from discussing their problems. They also said that universities are meant to be places where students can exchange ideas, express their opinions, and take part in debates.

The students further asked for the withdrawal of all FIR cases registered against them and demanded that those arrested be set free. The students also called for the protection of students’ rights, particularly their freedom of speech and peaceful demonstrations within the university premises.

The students also stated that the institutions should concentrate on better education rather than imposing restrictions on student activities. It was further emphasised that the students would continue raising educational and student-related issues until their demands are fulfilled.

AISA at Patna University said it will continue working to protect students’ rights and ensure that education-related issues are not ignored on campus.
