State University of New York, upGrad launch UG programme allowing transfer to US SUNY campuses

NEW DELHI: The State University of New York (SUNY) has partnered with upGrad to offer undergraduate programmes for Indian students. The UG programme enables students to begin their undergraduate degree online through SUNY Global Academy (SUNY GA) and transfer to a SUNY campus for the other 3 years.

This initiative aims to provide Indian students access to education in 64 SUNY campuses, including institutions such as Stony Brook University, the University at Buffalo, and the University at Albany. Enrollment for the first cohort of this programme is now open, with the first batch scheduled to begin in early 2025.

Programme structure and fields of study

Students enrolled in the SUNY bachelor’s programme will complete the first year (30 credits) online through SUNY GA, studying General Education (GenEd) courses. Upon meeting the required GPA, they can transfer to a SUNY campus for the remaining three years of study. Available fields under the SUNY bachelor’s programme include engineering, computer science, business, nursing, architecture, economics, law, and liberal arts.

The programme includes academic coursework and hands-on leadership development, incorporating Harvard Business Review case studies, leadership training, research opportunities, and mentorship from SUNY advisors.

Eligibility criteria

To be eligible for the SUNY bachelor’s year 1 programme, applicants are required to have completed high school with an IB Diploma, Class 12 certificate from a nationally recognized board (CBSE, ISC, IGCSE), or an equivalent international qualification.

A minimum score of 65% in science or commerce and at least 65% in English is required. Additionally, applicants are required to meet English language proficiency requirements through TOEFL (≥ 90), IELTS (≥ 6.5), or Duolingo (≥ 105). Applications are required to include a Statement of Purpose (SoP), a personal essay, resume, and evidence of extracurricular involvement.

Transfer process to SUNY campuses

After completing first year, students who meet the required GPA can transfer to their chosen SUNY campus upon meeting the eligibility criteria. GPA requirements vary by university, with institutions like Cornell University requiring a GPA above 3.3, Stony Brook University and Binghamton University requiring 3.2, and the University at Buffalo accepting transfers with a GPA above 2.5. The selection process is based on academic merit, co-curricular achievements, and an evaluation of application.
