Tamil Nadu launches ‘Akal Vilaku’ scheme to combat cyber threats, protect girls’ education

To spread awareness about cyber safety, and safeguard the safety of girl students from mental, and social dilemmas, the Tamil Nadu government has launched ‘Akal Vilaku’ scheme. The initiative aims to protect class 9 to 12 female students from mental, social challenges and cyber threats that may lead to school discontinuation.

The ‘Akal Vikali’ scheme was launched by Anbil Mahesh Poyyamozhi, School Education Minister, at Keeramangalam Government Girls Higher Secondary School, Pudukottai, Tamil Nadu.

“To create awareness among students about avoiding cybercrime, the State Educational Research and Training Institute has developed an awareness information brochure and videos,” the official statement reads.

The awareness programmes are designed to protect especially girl students from falling victim to cyber frauds. Teachers in various schools will educate students about these programmes along with the career guidance training in schools, it added.

“Teachers will also create awareness on proper handling of computer operations and online activities while using efficient classrooms and high-tech laboratories in government schools. Some guidelines for safe use of the internet by school children,” as per the official statement.

The government has outlined some important points for girls students on how to be aware of cyber frauds and scams.

• Personal Information: No student should share their personal information with anyone online.
• Parental Guidance: Parents should be aware about the online threat and equip their electronic devices with anti-viruses. Children should use the internet application under parental supervision.
• Use Authentic Site: Students should never trust any proxy sites, and always rely on official government or private institutions websites.
• Avoid Harmful Content: Block all the pages or video channels spreading harmful or hateful content.
• Inform Immediately: If any student is subjected to cyber crime, they should immediately inform their parents or teachers about it.
• Avoid false or fake advertisements: Never fall prey to fake or false advertisements. Cross check about it twice before getting inspired by it.
• Combat Online: Use strong passwords for gmail, and other social media sites to avoid being hacked.
• Never Share OTP: Never share your OTP and bank details with anyone online. Report to the authorities immediately.
• Never Upload Personal Photos: Be wary of sharing photos on the internet

Notably, any student who wishes to report any suspicious or scam activity they come across, can file a legal complaint to the cyber crime branch through the ‘www.cybercrime.gov.in’ email ID and helpline number ‘1930.’
