THE World University Rankings 2027: IISc leads India at 254; IIT Indore in 651–700 band

Eight Indian institutions are listed in THE World University Rankings 2027, with IIT Patna placed in the 701–800 band and IIT Gandhinagar and IIT Mandi in the 801–1000 band.
The Indian Institute of Science (IISc) has emerged as the highest-ranked Indian institution in the Times Higher Education (THE) World University Rankings 2027. IISc has secured 254th position globally with an overall score of 57, including 62.1 in teaching, 58.6 in research environment, 51.5 in research quality, 98.0 in industry and 31.1 in international outlook. IIT Indore's overall score was in the 42.4–43.3 range, while IIT Patna scored between 40.2 and 42.3.
IIT Indore is the next highest-ranked Indian institute, featuring in the 651–700 band, followed by IIT Patna in the 701–800 band. IIT Gandhinagar and IIT Mandi are placed in the 801–1000 band.

Asian universities resumed their upward trajectory after a brief pause last year, with the movement putting pressure on the longstanding dominance of Western institutions at the top of the rankings.
The University of Oxford retained the top position for the 11th consecutive year, while MIT remained second.Princeton and Stanford shared third place, followed by the University of Cambridge at fifth.
The US and UK continued to dominate the top 10. The UK has 25 institutions in the top 200, one fewer than last year. The US has 53 institutions in the top 200, two fewer than in the previous edition.
China's Tsinghua University climbed to 11th place, overtaking Switzerland's ETH Zurich and becoming the highest-ranked Asian university.
THE reported a broader decline across several metrics among universities in Anglophone countries, including research quality, despite their continued strength in reputation. China increased its number of universities in the top 200 from 13 in the 2024 edition to 17 this year, with 71% of those institutions improving their positions.
Japan, meanwhile, recorded declines at the top of its rankings. Overall, the THE World University Rankings 2027 include 2,297 universities from 118 countries and territories, up from 2,191 universities in the previous edition.
