The new JNVs will accommodate 15,680 students, while 85 new KVs and the expanded KV Shivamogga will serve 82,560 students.
NEW DELHI: The Union Cabinet headed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi has approved the opening of 28 new Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalaya (JNVs) in uncovered districts and 85 new Kendriya Vidyalayas (KVs) under the civil and defence sectors. The committee has also approved the expansion of KV Shivamogga in Karnataka, by adding two additional sections in all the classes under the Kendriya Vidyalaya scheme.
As per the official press release, the implementation of these JNVs will involve creating administrative posts as per Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalaya Samiti’s established norms for a full-fledged Navodaya Vidyalaya with a capacity of 560 students. Once the schools are fully functional, they will provide education to 15,680 students.
“The administrative structure for implementing the project will require the creation of posts at par with the norms fixed by the Sangathan for running of one full-fledged KV with a capacity of approximately 960 students,” the official press release read. The 85 new KVs and expanded KV Shivamogga will together accommodate around 82,560 students.
JNVs are residential and co-educational schools offering modern education from Class 6 to Class 12. These schools primarily cater to talented children from rural areas, irrespective of their family’s socio-economic background. Admission to JNVs is conducted through a selection test, with approximately 49,640 students admitted to Class 6 each year.
“In recent years, Navodaya Vidyalayas have witnessed increasing enrolment of girls (42%), as well as SC (24%), ST (20%) and OBC (39%) children, thereby ensuring that quality education is accessible to all,” the official press release read.
Kendriya Vidyalayas are established to address the educational needs of children of central government employees, including those in defence and paramilitary forces, as well as children of other groups such as the floating population and those residing in specific locations across the country.
Budget for JNVs, KVs establishment
According to the official press release, the estimated cost for setting up 28 JNVs is Rs 2,359.82 crore over five years from 2024-25 to 2028-29. This includes a capital expenditure of Rs 1,944.19 crore and an operational expenditure of Rs 415.63 crore.
The estimated cost for establishing 86 KVs and expanding one existing Kendriya Vidyalaya is Rs 5,872.08 crore over eight years, starting from 2025-26. This amount includes a capital expenditure of Rs 2,862.71 crore and an operational expenditure of Rs 3,009.37 crore.
“Grateful to Hon'ble PM Shri @narendramodi Ji for approving 28 new Navodaya Vidyalayas across uncovered districts, including Purba Bardhaman & Jhargram in Bengal. This landmark decision will benefit 15,680 students, create 1,316 permanent jobs, and boost local economies,” Sukanta Majumdar, member of the Lok Sabha posted on X.
