NEW DELHI: At the 165th convocation of the University of Madras, President Droupadi Murmu said educated women can make greater contribution to the economy, provide leadership in various sectors and make a positive impact on the society.
She said about 1.85 lakh students are currently studying in Madras University and its affiliated colleges and out of them more than 50% are girls. "The University of Madras is a shining example of gender equality."
The President said, "University of Madras is a shining example of gender equality" and "we are investing in the progress of our nation" by investing in the education of girls. Educated women can make greater contribution to the economy, provide leadership in various sectors and make a positive impact on the society, she underlined.
Congratulating the graduating students, Murmu said this region has been a cradle of civilisation and culture. "Tirukkural is guiding all of us for centuries." "Throughout its journey of over 165 years, University of Madras has adhered to high standards of academics, providing an environment that fosters intellectual curiosity and critical thinking," the President said.
She said, "I appeal to all the students to never let any anxiety overwhelm you. There is always an opening or opportunity which may not be visible for some time. Have faith in your abilities and keep moving forward." Further, she encouraged the university to be at the forefront of finding learning-based solutions to the problems being faced by the nation and the world at large.
"University of Madras has a rich history and glorious legacy. It is indeed a matter of great pride that six former Presidents of India were students of this University and walked the same corridors that you walk through today," she added.

"The alumni of the University of Madras can play a significant role in its growth as a global centre of excellence. The University has contributed to their success in many ways, therefore they should try to give back to their alma mater," she said in her convocation speech.
The great bhakti tradition of poetry originated in Tamil Nadu and it was taken to the north of the nation by the wandering saints. The temple architecture of Tamil Nadu, and the statues and sculptures are a tribute to human excellence, she noted. Earlier, Murmu was accorded a guard of honour at the Raj Bhavan.
