UWA begins India admissions today, becoming first foreign university to launch two campuses simultaneously in Mumbai and Chennai with industry-focused programmes
The University of Western Australia (UWA) has opened applications for its upcoming campuses in Mumbai and Chennai, marking its first move outside Australia. The application process began today, April 20, 2026. It includes undergraduate and postgraduate programmes such as computer science, artificial intelligence, cyber security, data science, business management, economics, MBA, and information technology.
The development is notable as UWA becomes the only foreign university to launch two campuses in India at the same time.
With campuses planned in two of India’s major education and business hubs, the university is aiming to give students access to globally recognised programmes while studying within the country.
University of Western Australia expands global footprint with India campuses
The University of Western Australia has called this expansion a major step in its international journey, with a clear focus on India’s growing education market and talent base.

“Opening applications for our India campuses marks a defining moment in UWA’s journey. With Mumbai and Chennai, we are creating a scale of opportunity that allows more Indian students to access a Global Top 100 education within the country,” said Vice-Chancellor Professor Amit Chakma.
He stressed that the vision goes beyond classroom learning. “Our focus goes beyond academics; through deep industry integration, global faculty, and strong collaborative pathways, we are building an ecosystem that prepares students for real-world impact. This reflects our strong belief in India’s future and its extraordinary talent potential,” he added.
UWA focuses on industry-linked education model
A major highlight of the University of Western Australia India campuses is the emphasis on connecting academics with real-world experience. The university plans to build strong industry partnerships and offer practical learning opportunities alongside regular coursework.
This approach, it said, is intended to improve employability and ensure students graduate with skills that match industry expectations. Students will also interact with international faculty, visiting professors, and gain exposure through exchange and immersion programmes.

Beyond academics, the campuses are expected to offer a vibrant student life, including clubs, hackathons, debates, and cultural activities aimed at encouraging creativity, collaboration, and leadership.
UWA Mumbai, Chennai campuses timeline and programmes
The University of Western Australia said its Mumbai campus, located in Andheri East, is set to welcome its first batch in September 2026. The Chennai campus will begin most of its programmes in March 2027.
The MBA programme, however, will start earlier, November 2026, across both campuses, giving postgraduate applicants an earlier entry option.
With applications now open, the university is inviting students from across India and nearby regions to be part of its first batches, offering a mix of local study and global exposure.
