UPES Dehradun announces new center of excellence for AI to support research, develop technologies

NEW DELHI: UPES Dehradun will establish a new center of excellence for AI (Artificial Intelligence) at its campus. The center seeks to support research and applications that will enable the students, faculty and researchers to develop technologies for real-life and industry.

UPES center will focus on AI and data sciences. As per the institute, the center will be equipped with high-end servers including “GPUs, and TPUs (transaction processing units)” and will provide world-class infrastructure for over 50 researchers to work simultaneously. This advanced facility will foster multidisciplinary research, consulting and training, the institute added.

The center of excellence will offer interdisciplinary masters and research programmes in data sciences and AI. It will implement the developed technologies in various sectors such as BFSI (Banking, Financial Services, and Insurance), healthcare, defense, and manufacturing. Leveraging its in-house expertise, it will provide consulting services, continuous education, and management development programmes.

“In the recent past, especially with the availability of high-end hardware, AI has evolved into one of the most impactful technologies with huge implications in multiple sectors that contribute to the global economy. Through this Center of Excellence, we aim to contribute to not only fundamental research in AI and related fields, but also work on their application, provide hands-on experience to students, and collaborate with government and industry,” said Ravi S Iyer, dean, school of computer science, UPES.

According to a recent report by McKinsey on Generative AI estimates that between 2030 and 2060, around half of today's work activities could be automated, with a midpoint estimate of 2045.
