UPSC NDA Revised Vacancy; 19 vacancies for women in national defence academy, still ‘no entry’ in NA

NEW DELHI: The Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) has issued a revised NDA and NA vacancy as per the Supreme Court order to allow women to take admission in the national defense academy (NDA) and naval academy (NA). As per the revised vacancy, there are a total of 400 vacancies in NDA, NA. As many as 19 vacancies are for women candidates in NDA, whereas there is no vacancy allotted for them in naval academy.

As per the UPSC official statement, “In compliance with the Supreme Court’s order permitting women candidates to participate in the NDA and NA Examination (II), 2021, it is hereby informed that the Ministry of Defence has furnished the following revised vacancy position thereby earmarking vacancies for women.”

On August 18, in a major step towards gender equality, the top court had passed an interim order permitting women candidates to appear in the NDA exams on a provisional basis. Following this, on September 8, the Centre allowed the admission of girls in NDA.

In September, after the apex court passed the order, the Centre asked for more time to implement and asked time till May 2022. However, the top court said there should be no delay in allowing women aspirants to take the exam.

The Ministry of Defence on Monday informed Parliament that the exam, which has been opened for women for the first time, has one woman for every third applicant. "The total number of applications received is 5,75,856. Among them, 1,77,654 are women. Necessary infrastructure and facilities for training of female candidates are in place," said the Ministry of Defence, as per the India Today report.

The UPSC is expected to declare the NDA 2 2021 result soon at upsc.gov.in as the vacancies are out now. UPSC NDA 2 exam 2021 was held on November 14 and women candidates also appeared for the first time.
