NEW DELHI: The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has recently clarified that it does not publish History books after text on ‘Varna system’ in the CBSE Class 6 History textbook went viral on social media. Despite the clarification, the image of the CBSE History book is doing rounds on Twitter.

The CBSE drew sharp criticism from political leaders and students for allegedly having ‘casteist text’ in its textbook. Actor-politician Kamal Haasan’s Makkal Needhi Maiam raised objections against a chapter on ‘Varna system’ and urged central government and CBSE to ensure that the lessons on caste system be removed from textbooks.
Replying to the Makkal Needhi Maiam tweet, the CBSE clarified, “The Class 6 History textbook containing topics on Varnas has been wrongly attributed as published by CBSE. This is factually incorrect. It is clarified that CBSE does not publish History textbooks, thus the matter does not relate to CBSE.”
