West Bengal govt drafts bill allowing transfer of experienced professors to new universities

The West Bengal government is all set to introduce and pass an inter-university transfer bill, aimed to move state university professors to new universities, the West Bengal chief minister Suvendu Adhikari said in a press conference, the Telegraph reported.

The inter-university transfer bill will be tabled in a special assembly on September 10, allowing “experienced teachers” from a state university to be transferred “urgently” to a new university, CM Adhikari said in the report.

The bill, formally named the West Bengal Universities and Colleges Administration and Regulation Amendment Bill, 2026, was approved by the WB state cabinet on Monday, the report read.

However, as per the academicians, through the inter-university transfer bill, the government could transfer veteran teachers from their campus to a new university, it added.

Experienced professors can guide new universities: West Bengal CM

“Transfers from one college to another are common for government college teachers, who are appointed through the public service commission. But this provision does not currently extend to university teachers,” the report said.

The government could transfer teaching and non-teaching staff across all levels with the help of the bill, it read.

“A special session will be held in the Assembly on September 10 from 11am to 1pm for the bill. We have already sent the proposal to the Speaker. We are going for the inter-university (transfer) of teaching and non-teaching staff on an urgent basis. I hope you can understand what I am saying,” the chief minister said in the report.

Explaining the importance of the inter-university transfer bill, CM Adhikari said that many experienced professors will go to the new universities and guide those universities regarding infrastructure, classes, and how to make centre of excellence, it added.
