NEW DELHI: West Bengal’s school education department has decided to hold the State Achievement Survey (SAS) on November 25. In preparation for this, the West Bengal Council of Higher Secondary Education (WBCHSE) notified all schools under the council to not hold any exams on November 25.

The State Achievement Survey, which was held for the first time in 2022, will be conducted to assess the learning level of students in Classes 3,5,8 and 10.

In 2022, the students were tested on language, mathematics and environmental science for Classes 3 and 5; language, mathematics, science and social science for Class 8; and language, mathematics, English, science and social science for Class 10. Over 10,000 schools participated in the first State Achievement Survey.

This SAS 2023 immediately follows the recently-concluded State Educational Achievement Survey (SEAS). In contrast to SAS 2023, which is conducted by the state, SEAS was held by the new exam and testing body under the National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT) called PARAKH. Moreover, the SEAS was a larger survey focusing on block level schools. This was the first time that the education ministry held such a survey.

SEAS 2023 was conducted to gauge the foundational literacy and numeracy of students in Classes 3,6 and 9 across government, government-aided, and private-unaided schools across the country. 110 lakh students across the country wrote the exam SEAS 2023.

PARAKH, under the NCERT, is also set to hold the National Achievement Survey (NAS) in 2024. NAS is a periodical survey held by the union education ministry to assess the learning levels of students. The last NAS was conducted in 2021.
