AICTE to translate SWAYAM, NPTEL courses online into Indian languages
NEW DELHI: The All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) has decided to translate online courses on the Centre’s e-learning platform, Swayam, into regional Indian languages for students in rural areas.
Presently, technical courses on Swayam and NPTEL, the National Programme on Technology Enhanced Learning, are broadcast on Swayam Prabha in English.
AICTE has invited applications from people who have previously completed Swayam courses and obtained an “elite certificate”, as they are well-suited for the role. Teachers in engineering colleges who teach these courses and are proficient in an Indian language are also eligible.
These courses are required to be translated into eight Indian languages on an urgent basis.
The letter from AICTE chairman, Anil Sahasrabudhe, says: “Translated scripts made available in different Indian languages which can help students, read while watching videos. This will be very useful for students particularly from rural areas and in respect of fundamental pre-requisite technical courses of first year or courses in which failure rate is high.”
Similarly, over 1700 video courses are available on NPTEL, which are delivered in English with transcripts available for the same. These are the courses in various disciplines of engineering at both the undergraduate and postgraduate levels. The method to be followed for translation of courses is available at the web portal
“Selected candidates will be given suitable honorarium and their contribution shall also be recognised in the form of suitable awards of certifications with recognition in course videos. There are other non-tangible benefits too,” reads the letter.
