AIIMS Nagpur resident doctors call off protest after talks with administration, cops

NAGPUR: The Resident Doctors' Association (RDA) of AIIMS Nagpur on Friday called off its protest after getting an assurance from hospital administration and police regarding safety in the wake of an assault on a doctor. All India Institute of Medical Sciences, Nagpur said in a press release that the administration strongly condemns any act of violence against doctors.

Members of the RDA and AIIMS Nagpur officials met Nagpur Police Commissioner Vishwas Nangre Patil and other senior police officers in the morning, it said.

The Commissioner of Police assured the resident doctors that security at the hospital will be increased and stringent action will be taken against the culprits in Tuesday's incident.

Resident doctor allegedly attacked

A resident doctor at the hospital was allegedly attacked by four persons inside the ICU on Tuesday following the death of a relative during treatment.

Resident Doctors on Thursday staged a demonstration condemning the incident and demanded that the institute adopt no special treatment policy, claiming that very often patients bring letters from politicians and expect privileges or try to intimidate the staff. As demanded by the protesting Resident Doctors, AIIMS will undertake the legal and police proceedings in connection with the incident, the release issued by the institute said.

Earlier, the victim doctor himself had filed a police complaint. AIIMS also assured that no Resident Doctor or student will face any victimisation or harassment due to their participation in the protest.
