NEW DELHI: In wake of the severe levels of air pollution in Delhi and the National Capital Region (NCR), some schools have suspended outdoor activities and recommended use of masks as safety measures for students. Parents and the opposition government in Delhi have been demanding closure of schools amid the deteriorating air quality in the capital and surrounding regions.
In an email, shared by a journalist on social media, a top Gurugram school informed parents that the outdoor activities have been suspended and online classes will be conducted on November 14. Advising students to wear marks for the coming week, the school said it will come with a plan by this Sunday.
“It is unfortunate that pollution continues to impact our city, and our students are bearing the consequences. Due to the severe pollution levels, we are suspending all outdoor activities for the day. The school will be closely monitoring AQI levels throughout the day to ensure the safety and well- being of our students. We strongly encourage all students to wear masks to school for the coming week,” the mail read.
“Additionally, the school will operate online on Thursday, 14th November 2024. We will continue to monitor the situation and make an informed decision regarding the following week. Parents will be updated on the plan by Sunday, 17th November 2024,” it added.
A Delhi school issued an advisory on air pollution, laying down guidelines to ensure the well-being of students. The school has restricted outdoor activities and advised students to stay indoors early mornings and late evenings. For travelling, the school suggested using eco-friendly means such as carpooling, CNG vehicles or public transportation such as metro or bicycle.
Students have been advised to use masks, preferably N95 and take extra precautions if having respiratory problems. It asked to limit the use of fragrances, scents, and air fresheners. Among the guidelines are following a nutritious diet, keeping oneself hydrated, and ensuring proper ventilation at homes.
The peer educators at school conduct sensitisation programmes to raise awareness about pollution. Parents can add their two cents to the discussion, the school added.
