Assam’s GMCH will have a new building with over 5,000 beds. Pragjyotishpur Medical College to be state’s new medical college.
NEW DELHI: Assam is going to have the country’s second largest medical college with the upgradation of Gauhati Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) having more than 5,000 beds, the state chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said on Saturday. The hospital will offer 800 beds for maternal and child healthcare. The CM also inspected the upcoming Pragjyotishpur Medical College.
“In the coming few years, Guwahati will boast the country’s second largest medical college with over 5,000 beds. With the upcoming Pragjyotishpur Medical College, MMCH and upgraded GMCH, Guwahati will have one of the best medical ecosystems in the country,” said Sarma in a post on X.
In the new GMCH building, the principal’s office will be located on the top floor. The Assam government will demolish the old hospital building completely and develop a 3,000-bed state-of-the-art- hospital.

“In my view, the superspecialty services of both Pragjyotishpur and GMCH will be shifted to Mahendra Mohan Choudhury Hospital. Additional buildings will be constructed on both sides of the road,“ the CM said.
Upgradation of GMCH
According to the new infrastructure, one side of the hospital will host 3,000 beds while the cancer hospital will comprise 2,000 beds, bringing the total capacity of beds in GMCH to 5,000.
“After Patna Medical College, it will become the second largest medical college in India. Not just the North-East or Eastern region, it will be India’s second largest,” Sarma remarked. The construction work will be completed by October 30. MMCH will also offer super-specialty care including neurology and cardiology.
Presently, Assam has a total of 1,650 MBBS seats in 14 government medical colleges . Last year, The National Medical Commission (NMC) gave recognition to Tinsukia Medical College with 100 MBBS admissions per year in the college.
