BCI extends deadline for law colleges seeking approval for 2026-27 session

The Bar Council of India (BCI) has extended the deadline for existing Centres of Legal Education to complete and submit applications for continuation of approval of affiliation for the 2026-27 academic session till August 31, 2026. The one-time extension has been granted after several universities and law colleges sought additional time due to delays in obtaining affiliation orders, administrative issues and technical difficulties.

According to the BCI order, the extension applies only to existing centres of legal education seeking continuation or extension of approval for existing courses, sanctioned intake and approved sections. Applications submitted during the extended period will have to be accompanied by the applicable late fee, in addition to the prescribed application fee.

The BCI clarified that the extension is intended to ensure that institutions are able to submit complete applications so that their approval status for the 2026-27 academic session can be decided without affecting admissions and the commencement of classes. The council also said the relaxation does not dilute any requirement under the Rules of Legal Education, 2008.

The order said, "The extension is therefore being granted only to enable existing Centres of Legal Education to complete the prescribed application process and to permit the Bar Council of India to scrutinise and decide such applications on the basis of complete records.”

Applications must be complete by August 31

The BCI said an application will be treated as complete only if institutions upload all mandatory documents, including a valid affiliation or continuation-of-affiliation order wherever applicable, pay the prescribed fees and applicable late fee, and finally submit the application through the BCI portal by August 31, 2026.

Further, the council said that existing centres of legal education seeking continuation of approval must submit their applications through the BCI's online portal using their existing login credentials. Institutions that have not yet registered on the portal can request a registration link by emailing the Bar Council of India with their initial and latest approval letters, official mobile number and official email address.

Applications that remained in draft mode, were incomplete or had only partial fee payment after the earlier deadline of July 31, 2026 will be treated as delayed applications and will attract the applicable late fee.

Undertaking allowed in exceptional cases

The council has also allowed an undertaking mechanism for institutions that already possess all mandatory documents but could not complete the online submission due to technical, administrative or other justified reasons. Such institutions will have to submit self-attested copies of all mandatory documents to the BCI and provide a written undertaking to complete the portal submission by August 31. Any approval granted in such cases will remain subject to verification of documents, scrutiny, inspection, and final approval by the competent authority.

The BCI emphasised that submission of an application, payment of fees, furnishing an undertaking or acceptance of documents does not amount to approval or permission to admit students.

The order stated, "No Centre of Legal Education shall admit students or claim any right to admit students merely on the basis of registration on the portal, generation of an application number, submission of an application, payment of fees, furnishing of an undertaking, submission of self-attested documents or pendency of the application before the Bar Council of India."

The council further said that no extension is expected after August 31, 2026, and the online portal for such applications will be closed after the deadline.
