NEW DELHI: Banaras Hindu University has signed an agreement with Kalipatnapu Foundation for introducing 40 scholarships for undergraduate and postgraduate chemistry students of the Institute of Science.
The university said the foundation will grant an endowment of Rs 1 crore for instituting these scholarships in honour of Kalipatnapu Kondiah, a former student and faculty member of BHU.
Kondiah completed BSc and MSc in Chemistry from the university, following which he pursued a career in teaching at his alma mater from 1922 to 1941. He also headed the chemistry department. He then left the university in 1941 to join the freedom movement, for which he was jailed for five-years. Upon release from jail, he set up a chemical factory in Andhra Pradesh to help the country become self-reliant.
The Kalipatnapu Foundation was set up by his son Indusekhar Rao Kalipatnapu, his daughter Indira Devi, grandson Chaitanya Kalipatnapu and other family members.
BHU registrar Arun Singh and Indushekhar Rao signed the agreement in the presence of vice-chancellor Sudhir Jain, and family members of Kalipanapu family. Chaitanya said the best way for a student to show gratitude to his university is through paying for the future generation of students. “Through this donation, our family wishes to acknowledge the impact BHU education made to the life of my grandfather and therefore to the generations,” he added.
