Career counselling cell must in schools: Himachal Pradesh DoE

NEW DELHI: The Directorate of Higher Education, Himachal Pradesh has directed all deputy directors of higher education to ensure that the career counselling and guidance cell is constituted in all schools. The deputy directors have also been ordered to issue instructions to all heads of schools to make career counselling cell mandatory.

Reiterating its aim to better the career of the future generation, the DoE asked the deputy directors to nominate one senior most teacher as nodal officer and one other teacher as a member for the cell.

“Any prominent personality of the area academician, successful personality, philanthropist, successful industrialist, senior most officer of the district i.e. Deputy Commissioner, SDM, CMO/BMO, District Employment Officer, BDO etc. may be called invariably as a special guest to interact with the students,” it suggested.

The letter issued by the DoE Himachal Pradesh on February 16, 2019, ordered the constitution of the career counselling cell.

In the latest notification issued on Monday, the directorate of education instructed to hold one session every month on topics like career guidance, awareness against drug abuse, students and society etc. It also provided action plan for conducting the sessions in the school.

The topics suggested by the directorate for counselling sessions are given below.

Motivational Speech - Role of discipline, purpose of education and importance of life skills, communication skills, life stories of great personalities, climate change and recent discoveries in science are some of the topics suggested by the DoE for Classes 9 to 12.

Career Guidance - The schools have been directed to provide students with career guidance to “help them make appropriate choices for higher education”.

Swachhata ka Path - Special sessions for cleanliness be conducted in the vicinity of the school and proper disposal of garbage.

Mobile phones and social media - Awareness campaign for proper utilization of electronic devices such as mobile phones, tablets and social media will be conducted.

Use of Sports - Awareness campaign for the benefits of sports activities both outdoor and indoor games along with extra co-curricular activities will be conducted for overall development of students.

Students and Society - Schools have been instructed to conduct awareness programmes on how students can contribute to society. Programmes like planting a tree, donating blood, feeding the hungry or donating some blankets during the winter shall be held. Workshops on eradication of child marriages,casteism, untouchability etc should be conducted, it said.

Importance of add on courses and skill courses - Special sessions on importance of skill based courses and the importance should be taught to students.
