NEW DELHI: The Consortium of National Law Universities (CNLU) has updated the test pattern and syllabus for Common Law Admission Test ( CLAT 2021 ). This year, CLAT LLM will have two sections; objective section and subjective section. Also, the consortium has introduced cutoff marks in CLAT LLM. The evaluation of the subjective section will be done only if the candidate has secured minimum cutoff marks in the first section. The details of the new test pattern are given below.

What is new in CLAT LLM?
There is nothing new in adding a subjective section in PG-CLAT 2021. For the previous session of CLAT, the consortium had announced several changes to the pattern and syllabus of the test. Among the major changes, the consortium announced that it will introduce minimum cutoff marks in CLAT LLM for evaluation of the descriptive section. However, with COVID-19 outbreak throwing the entire academic schedule in disarray, the consortium decided to go solely with the objective section and removed the subjective section and minimum cutoff criteria.
What is the test structure of CLAT LLM 2021?
The test paper of PG-CLAT 2021 will have subjective and objective sections.
-
Objective section
The objective section will consist of 100 multiple choice type questions to be asked from various comprehensive passages. The content of the passages may be drawn from the legal reports, editorials, important cases, judgements and statutes. Each passage will be followed by a series of questions that will test the critical thinking, analytical skills along with the legal knowledge of the students.
As per the consortium, CLAT LLM will be designed to test the ability of candidates to read and comprehend the issues discussed in the passage and to understand the arguments and viewpoints set out in the passage.
It will also test the awareness of legal issues and facts discussed in the passages. Candidates will have to apply their knowledge of the fields of law to answer the questions.
-
Subjective section
In this section, candidates will have to demonstrate their writing skills. This section requires the candidates to write any two essays from the list of questions supplied.
The word count of the essays should not be more than 800 words each. The subjective section will test candidates’ awareness of the law, facts and philosophical issues around the question. The test of writing skills will also include the ability to structure the answer and set the arguments and perspectives in an orderly manner and draw conclusions.
Criteria of minimum qualifying marks
The objective section will be evaluated only if the candidate has secured 40% (35% in case of SC, ST, and PWD) marks in the first section. Thus, there will be the cutoff marks in PG-CLAT.
