COVID-19: AMU, Jamia Millia Islamia advise students to stay home

NEW DELHI: The Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) and the Jamia Millia Islamia
(JMI) university, on Thursday, instructed students to stay home and continue their academic work online amid rising COVID-19 cases across the country.

AMU also postponed the AMU Engineering Entrance Examination (AMUEEE) and other AMU entrance exams which were scheduled to be held in June. A new schedule for the entrance tests will be announced later.

Other central universities such as Banaras Hindu University and University of Hyderabad have also stopped regular offline classes. In Delhi, University of Delhi (or Delhi University) and Jawaharlal Nehru University have both issued fresh guidelines. The Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) and Indian Institutes of Management (IIMs) are also taking measures with increasing cases..

AMU hostels

AMU observed that students are staying at hostels despite the hostels being closed due to the pandemic. The institute asked students to leave for their homes citing health concerns.

AMU, in a statement, said: “Now, due to rising cases of COVID-19 across India, the situation has become alarming and there is danger of the epidemic occurring in hostels also. Therefore, all the students are advised to leave the hostels and go to their respective homes. This will help protect the health of the students.”

AMU also urged students to “continue classes and research work in online mode”.

JMI COVID-19 guidelines

JMI has released guidelines for students and staff considering the rising COVID-19 cases. The institute asked students to stay home and avoid visiting “unless it is very essential”.

JMI, in a statement, said: “All students are advised to stay at home and avoid physical presence for their academic work, library, laboratory etc. unless it is very essential. All COVID- 19 Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) has to be followed to enter campus for academic activities and essential work which includes thermal screening at gates, wearing of mask, social distancing, no spitting in public places and entry with only valid identity proof along with the purpose of visit to the University Campus.”

JMI has also made it mandatory to wear masks inside the campus and has cancelled the bookings of seminar halls, auditoriums and conference halls. The institute has also set up a monitoring committee to assess the situation and give necessary advice to the administration.
