NEW DELHI: As Omicron, Covid-19 cases in India see a spike, several state governments have announced schools, colleges closure immediately. Meanwhile, the Covid-19 vaccination drive for 15 to 18-year-old age group started on January 3 with over 40 lakh children getting their first dose on day 1, union health minister Mansukh Mandaviya said.

Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal said he has tested positive for Covid-19 and isolated himself at home.

Punjab, Uttar Pradesh, Delhi, West Bengal, Tamil Nadu, Odisha, Karnataka, Goa, Haryana, Telangana are among states that have decided to close schools due to a spike in Covid-19 and Omicron cases in the country. However, several states have decided to reopen schools for higher classes.

"Over 40 Lakhs between 15-18 age group received their first dose of #COVID19 vaccine on the 1st day of vaccination drive for children, till 8 PM," health minister tweeted.

Delhi issued a yellow alert on December 28 and closed schools with immediate effect in view of fast-rising cases of infections. The Delhi government had announced winter break for pre-primary and primary classes from January 1 to 15.

Following the Delhi government’s decision, states started mulling over closing schools for primary classes.

The ministry of health and family welfare issued guidelines for vaccination of 15 to 18 year-olds. The Covid vaccination registration will be online on the government’s vaccination portal Co-WIN or walk-in at the centres. Children of this age group are eligible to get only Covaxin, the only one cleared for emergency use for children. The new guidelines for Covid vaccination will be in effect from January 3, 2022.

West Bengal Covid News: IIEST Shibpur ask students to leave the campus as Covid-19 cases spike in the state

The Indian Institute of Engineering Science and Technology (IIEST), Shibpur, West Bengal asked students to leave the campus as staying in hostels may give rise to Covid cases in the campus, reported the Telegraph India.  

In case of any student not being able to return home, the student has to submit a consent letter from the parent. Students staying on the campus will not be permitted to go outside the campus (except for medical purposes) without the permission of the chief warden.

According to an IIEST official, 130 students of BTech, MTech courses, and research scholars are residing on the campus. IIEST had partially opened the campus as they were calling back the students for practical classes and letting them attend online classes from the WiFi-enabled hostels. Although none has been tested positive yet in the campus,

No Lockdown in Delhi: Health minister says Delhi may see up to 14000 new Omicron, Covid cases today

India Covid Cases: 495 new omicron cases; 90,928 new Covid cases

Omicron in India: On Thursday, 495 Omicron cases were registered in India. There is a total of 2,630 Omicron active cases in India, says the Union health ministry data. 

Out of the total Omicron cases in India, Maharashtra has the maximum Omicron cases at 797, followed by Delhi at 465, Rajasthan 236, Kerala 234, Karnataka 226, Gujarat 204 and Tamil Nadu 121. 

Covid in India: 90,928 new coronavirus infections were reported. This is the highest recorded in over 200 days.

COVID-19, Omicron: UP schools closed till January 16; new curbs imposed

Due to a sudden surge in Covid-19 cases, the Uttar Pradesh government, in the latest notice, ordered the closure of schools from January 6 to January 16, 2022. Schools will remain closed for Class 10 and below. However, online classes will continue for these students. Students of Classes 11-12 should be called to school only for vaccination purposes and given holiday on the vaccination day and the next day. Their classes should be conducted through online mode only, the official notice read. Over 4,60,000 adolescents have received their first Covid vaccine shot under the drive to inoculate those in the 15-18 age group in the state.

Covid-19 Cases in India: Infected students took part in NCC camp, says NIT Director

NIT Director professor Lalit Awasthi said most of the infected students had taken part in an NCC camp, and there is a possibility that they contracted the disease there. Rapid Covid Test Kit: MKU researcher develops kit to diagnose COVID-19 in 12 seconds

T. Arokiyadoss, researcher and assistant professor in the Madurai Kamaraj University (MKU) developed a COVID-19 diagnostic kit to detect Covid infection in just 12 seconds. The kit, based on lab-on-a-chip technology has been patented in India. Arokiyadoss is the in-charge head of the Department of Physics at the Directorate of Distance Education, MKU, reported the Hindu.
