CUET 2022: AMU, Jamia officials said they are awaiting official communication from UGC. AMU had earlier said they wouldn't implement CUET or CUCET
NEW DELHI : Jamia Millia Islamia University (JMI) and Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) are yet to decide on implementing the Common University Entrance Test (CUET), said officials from the university on Tuesday.
Live Updates: CUET exam date, pattern, syllabus
Both said that they are yet to receive any official communication from the University Grants Commission (UGC) and that once they do, it will be tabled before the universities’ statutory bodies – the Academic and Executive Councils (AC and EC) – which will then decide on the exam.
AMU and Jamia Millia Islamia have minority status which is disputed and earlier, AMU officials had said they wouldn’t implement CUET – also known as the Central University Common Entrance Test ( CUCET ).
However, on Monday, the UGC chairman M Jadagesh Kumar said that the CUET will be compulsory for all central universities and also that the exam will not interfere with existing reservation policies of central institutions.
CUET 2022 committees
The institutes said that they have formed committees to look into the implementation of CUET . They said that a decision will be taken once they get official communication from the UGC.
“AMU has already constituted a committee for CUET which will look into the modalities. So far we have only gotten the news from newspapers, once we receive the letter from UGC then the committee constituted by the AC will look into it and decide. First we have to get the letter,” said M Shafey Kidwai, spokesperson for AMU.
“A decision will be taken by the Academic Council and then the Executive Council. A committee was constituted to decide on CUET. The decision is yet to be made,” said a Jamia Millia Islamia University official, asking not to be named.
AMU had earlier said that it will not implement CUET as a court case related to its minority status is pending in the Supreme Court. AMU has reserved 50 percent of seats in all courses for those students who have graduated from AMU schools.
As a minority institution JMI has 30 percent reservations for Muslim students, 10 percent reservations for Muslim women students, 10 percent reservations for Muslims belonging to other backward category (OBC). It also has reserved five percent seats for students who have passed out from Jamia schools.
The CUET will have four sections including one, general test and one domain-specific test.
All 45 central universities will have to mandatorily admit students based on the CUET scores. It will be held in July and the application process will begin in April.
