DCPCR serves notice to all 3 MCDs over teaching vacancies in schools

NEW DELHI : Delhi’s apex child rights body, the Delhi Commission For Protection of Child Rights (DCPCR), has written to all three Municipal Corporations of Delhi asking them to clarify the number of vacant teaching positions in schools run by them. The commission has asked East, South and North Delhi Municipal Corporations’ officials to file a detailed report by July 12.

DCPCR’s letter follows Delhi deputy chief minister Manish Sisodia’s widely-covered allegations on Monday that accused the schools run under the MCD of not having the pupil-teacher ratio mandated by the Right to Education Act (RTE) 2009.

The DCPCR is the state body responsible for ensuring the implementation of the RTE Act 2009 within Delhi.

DCPCR chairperson Anurag Kundu, through his official social media handle, said: “Delhi Commission For Protection of Child Rights has issued notices to all three MCDs on the media reports suggest nearly half of their schools don't meet the criteria of sufficient teachers which is a violation of Right to Education Act.”

DCPCR, in a letter to the directors of education at MCD, asked it to “provide school-wise data” on the “number of teaching positions lying vacant in schools run and aided by East MCD”. It has also asked the officials to provide details on the number of regular, contractual and guest teachers.

DCPCR said that media reports have brought to its notice “that nearly half of the MCD schools do not adhere to the pupil-teacher ratio prescribed under the RTE Act 2009”.

It also asked officials to outline the actions undertaken to fill vacant positions and the plan of action indicating when the positions will be filled.
