NEW DELHI: Delhi University is likely to begin final-year exams from August 17, in open-book examination, or OBE mode, DU told the Delhi High Court on July 13.

As per the revised date sheet, the university will begin the examinations on August 17 and conclude by September 8 for the final semester, or final year students of all undergraduate and postgraduate courses including School of Open Learning (SOL) and Non-Collegiate Women's Education Board (NCWEB).

“For such students who are unable to appear in the examinations in OBE mode remotely, it has been decided to conduct an additional phase of examinations through online/offline/blended mechanism, for the purpose of providing another opportunity to the students,” said DU’s affidavit. These examinations will be held after two weeks from the date of conclusion of the DU open book exam on September 8.

Earlier, on July 9, while hearing a petition, the Delhi High Court had instructed DU to file an affidavit detailing the exam schedule. The final-year exams have been postponed twice, creating confusion among students. The court also asked DU to explain the mode of examination it would be adopting.

The online open book exams were originally scheduled to begin on July 1 and were later postponed to July 10.

DU has said that the date sheet for postgraduates programmes and professional courses shall be released on or before July 20.

Online open book exam and mock tests

In its affidavit, DU has also said that it will hold mock tests in two phases, to make the students familiar with the OBE mode of exam. There will be three sessions of mock tests per day. The mock tests for OBE held earlier this month were plagued by technical glitches and caused widespread panic and confusion among students.

The first phase of the mock tests would be conducted from July 31 to August 4, the second phase will be from August 8 to August 12.

DU will also allow the infrastructure of colleges and university to be used by disabled students with prior information. “Facilities available at colleges and departments of university will be made accessible to students belonging to PWD category in general, and visually impaired (VI) in particular, so that ICT infrastructure is available to students with the prior information during the scheduled examinations in OBE mode to be conducted remotely. The facility will be available to other students as well with prior information and with the conditions of adherence of guidelines of social distancing and safety measures,” says the affidavit.

The university has also stated that students who could not fill their examination form, will be given another opportunity to submit them. The DU open book exam portal will allow submissions over July 21-25.

Delhi University open book exam and results

The university in its affidavit has stated that the evaluation of answer scripts will start from the first week of September and will continue till the first week of October.

“The University will make best efforts to declare the results expeditiously. However, depending upon the number of students who have appeared for the OBE remotely, it is expected that the declaration of results for different courses shall start from the first week of October onwards and conclude latest by 30th November, 2020,” states the affidavit submitted in the high court.
