Fighting COVID-19: MHRD, medical colleges contribute to PM CARES

NEW DELHI:Government education bodies and medical colleges have donated over Rs 40 crore to the Prime Minister’s Citizen Assistance and Relief in Emergency Situations Fund, or the PM CARES fund.

The 28 institutions, organisations, departments of the Ministry of Human Resource Development have contributed more than Rs 38.91 crore. And the Post-Graduate Institute of Medical Education and Research (PGIMER) has contributed Rs 2.15 crore, the director, Jagat Ram, told The Indian Express. At All India Institute of Medical Sciences, contributing a day’s salary was made optional.

Earlier, Union HRD Minister Ramesh Pokhriyal ‘Nishank’ had appealed to all the institutions, autonomous organisations under the MHRD to contribute to the PM CARES Fund. He himself has donated a month’s salary.

Ironically, doctors from across hospitals have pointed to the shortage of personal protective equipment for health workers in the middle of the COVID-19. However, Ram said they have adequate protective equipment for staff and continue to procure more as per requirement.“We will receive an order of 1,000 more PPE kits and we have also ordered thousands of N95 masks, so our staff has nothing to worry about in terms of safety equipment,” he told The Indian Express.
