Suman Chakraborty gets additional charge as IIIT Kalyani director: Education ministry

Chakraborty has been serving as the Director of the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Kharagpur since 2025.
The Ministry of Education (MoE) has appointed Suman Chakraborty with additional charge as Indian Institute of Information Technology (IIIT) Kalyani director. Chakraborty has also been serving as the director of the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Kharagpur since 2025.
New appointed IIIT Kalyani director completed his undergraduate studies in BTech mechanical engineering from Jadavpur University in 1996.
He further opted for masters of engineering (ME) from the Indian Institute of Science (IISc), on securing the first rank in the Graduate Aptitude Test for Engineering (GATE) in 1997, according to Wikipedia .
IIIT Kalyani's new director’s achievements
While pursuing his master’s, Chakraborty emerged as the faculty topper and received a gold medal and Senate Commendation for outstanding performance. Later in 1999, he joined Jadavpur University as a lecturer, where he served until 2002. During this period, he also began his doctoral research at IISc in 2000.
He completed his PhD in 2002 and was awarded the institute-level best-thesis award as well as "Best International CFD Thesis Award" for his work on solid-liquid phase transition during thermal processing of materials.
Notably, he is also a recipient of the Sir J C Bose National Fellowship, awarded by the Ministry of Science and Technology, Government of India
