COVID Vaccine: Union finance minister Nirmala Sitharam launched the IIM Banglore alumni association's initiative in online mode.
NEW DELHI: The alumni association of the Indian Institute of Management (IIM) Bangalore, pledged to donate 1 lakh doses of COVID-19 vaccine to urban and rural poor on Saturday.
The IIM Bangalore alumni’s initiative is a part of their “recovery, rehabilitation and prevention” plans for COVID-19. Union finance minister Nirmala Sitharaman virtually launched the initiative that aims to inoculate economically underprivileged people in the country.
“This initiative [donate a vaccine] comes at the right time and such an effort from the alumni of IIM Bangalore is emulatable; something that every institution in India can learn from,” said Sitharaman.
Present at the virtual alumni conclave, Devi Shetty, a member of the IIMB board of governors, highlighted the importance of financial assistance as many have lost earning opportunities amid the pandemic. “With more than 70% of India’s non-formal workforce out of jobs, this initiative from IIMB alumni is the need of the hour and by providing a paid vaccine, we will be able to ensure that a significant number of underprivileged people will get the first dose faster,” said Shetty.
Over 1,000 alumni attended the IIMB virtual conclave. Harish Mittal, president IIMB alumni association, urged other members to donate for the initiative.
