IISc Bengaluru student dies by suicide in hostel room, cites personal reasons in note

A 22-year-old engineering student at the Indian Institute of Science was found hanging from a ceiling fan. He allegedly died by suicide in his hostel room on the campus, police said on Friday. The deceased was identified as Gopal, a native of West Bengal. Police told PTI that the matter came to light after his fellow hostel mates visited his room.

The police have recovered a death note from the spot, in which he cited personal reasons for taking this extreme step. An unnatural death report has been registered at the Sadashivanagar police station, and the body has been sent for a post-mortem. Further investigation is underway.

Second suicide in a month

This is the second suicide case reported on the IISc Bengaluru campus this month. Before this, a B Tech student was found dead in his hostel room . The 19-year-old student, identified as Rakshan, hailed from the Chikkaballapura district. He was found hanging in his room on August 6.

Police found a handwritten note in his room, and the probe is underway. Police are investigating whether the deceased was under academic stress or if any other factor drove him to take the extreme step.
