IIT Bombay forms committee to investigate BTech student’s death, holds condolence meeting

NEW DELHI: The Indian Institute of Technology Bombay (IIT Bombay) today held a condolence meeting for Darshan Solanki, a BTech student who jumped off the seventh floor of a hostel building and died on February 12.

Calling the incident unfortunate, the institute said: “...Such a loss could not be prevented despite the efforts of the Institute and Student Mentors to support our students. A committee has been constituted to investigate the incident.”

“It is a great loss to the family and to the IITB Community. We pray that his family gets the strength to bear this loss. The Institute is with his family at this difficult time. We deeply mourn the tragic loss of Darshan’s life,” the IITB official statement read.

IIT Bombay held a condolence meeting and observed “two minutes of silence in memory of the departed soul. While we cannot change what has already happened, we will further increase our efforts to prevent such events in future,” it added.

Terming it as "institutional murder", the Ambedkar Periyar Phule Study Circle (APPSC) urged the institute to investigate the death of a BTech student and publish a report in the public domain.

The email from the IIT Bombay director, informing about the incident, did not even name the student, the students circle said adding that “the apathy of the institute even in the light of this grave incident is lost on the student community.”
