IIT Bombay, JSW Group to establish technology hub for steel manufacturing at IITB

NEW DELHI: Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Bombay and JSW Group, a business conglomerate have signed an agreement to establish the JSW Technology Hub to develop industrial applications and solutions for Indian steel industry. JSW Technology Hub will be established within the Centre of Excellence in Steel Technology (CoEST) at IIT Bombay , which was established with support from the ministry of steel and other industry partners.

According to a statement from IIT Bombay, the objective of the new hub is the rapid expansion of quality steel production with minimum carbon emissions within the target levels. Under the agreement with IIT Bombay, JSW Group will carry out research and development to develop steel technology for the Indian conglomerate.

As per the agreement with IIT Bombay, JSW will fund the JSW Technology Hub and provide technical support to build the hub. The construction of the JSW Technology Hub is expected to be completed by the financial year 2028. IIT Bombay and JSW Group will carry out inter-disciplinary research projects and technical activities on various aspects of steel manufacturing and its use, claims the institute. IIT Bombay and JSW will be able to develop patented industrial applications and solutions under the agreement with JSW being able to operationalize and commercialize these industrial applications.

The Sajjan Jindal Steel Professor Chair will be established by IIT Bombay to provide training and conduct research on steel manufacturing technologies. It is expected to help IIT Bombay to improve research and meet the demands of the industry, society and the government. “Our CoEST has a vision to facilitate the Indian steel sector to become a world leader. This agreement with JSW Group will help to further strengthen our efforts in this direction. Through this partnership, we would like to achieve rapid scale-up of quality steel production while enabling India to meet its sustainability goals by keeping carbon emissions within targeted levels,” said Subhasis Chaudhuri, director of IIT Bombay.
