IIT Bombay PG student jumps from 7th floor, dies; probe underway

NEW DELHI: A 26-year-old postgraduate student of the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Bombay died by suicide today. He jumped from the seventh floor of the IIT Bombay hostel. In his suicide note, however, he said he had depression and didn't hold anyone responsible.

“A 26-yr-old PG student of IIT Bombay died by suicide this morning, by jumping from the hostel's 7th floor. In his recovered suicide note, he stated he had depression and was under treatment, he didn't hold anyone responsible.” The Mumbai police informed that further probe is underway, as per reports.

The deceased student had written a message on the board in his hostel room, stating that no one should be held responsible for his death, a Powai police station official said.

His body was spotted by a watchman outside the seven-storey hostel building who called up an official of the institute. Later police were informed. Malviya was rushed to a nearby hospital where he was declared dead before admission, the official said.

The deceased student, who hailed from Madhya Pradesh, was pursuing a post-graduate course at the prestigious Indian Institute of Technology from last July. His family members were informed about his death, the official said, as per the PTI report.

Police have registered a case of accidental death, said Powai police station senior inspector Budhan Sawant. "The student had written a message on the board in his hostel room which shows he was undergoing treatment for depression. Further investigation is underway,” he said.

As per the government data presented in Lok Sabha in December, educational institutions like Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs), National Institutes of Technology (NITs), Indian Institute of Science, Indian Institute of Science Education and Research (IISER) along with central universities saw a total of 122 suicide cases. Of which, 58% of student suicides were from the Scheduled Caste, Scheduled Tribe, and minority communities.
