IIT Bombay to receive Rs 1.97 crore grant for academic, industry research

CSERL-IIT Bombay and VMware to create a platform for computing systems research and education to advance academic and industry research.
NEW DELHI: Indian Institute of Technology Bombay (IIT-B) to receive support from VMware, an IT company in an IIT-B computing systems education and research lab (CSERL) initiative to create a platform for computing systems research and education.
The CSERL of IIT Bombay will receive a grant of USD 240,000 or Rs 1.97 crore from the VMware University Research Fund (VMURF) to advance academic and industry research in foundational technologies like modern enterprise system. This will include computer, network, storage, and security, multi-cloud, mobile systems, edge, modern applications, and data as well as applied technologies such as blockchain, 5G, and 6G, according to a statement.

The platform will focus on designing academic programs and content with systems specialisation, and will also conduct outreach activities such as annual workshops, summer and winter schools. In addition to this, it will also be creating an optimal organisational ecosystem at the center to accelerate systems research and convert the capabilities in advanced systems research practice in India.
This relationship aims to advance the area of computing systems. VMware, Palo Alto, California is a provider of multi-cloud services for all apps, has been partnered with IIT Bombay on systems research since 2017 and VMURF has funded USD 275,000 since 2017, said the press release.
"The broad scope of CSERL activities is to work on cutting-edge modern Computing Systems research themes and projects, develop academic programmes and content, and provide platforms for learning and collaboration," the release said. The aim is to positively impact the capacity for work in research, academia and industry.
